Jigawa snatch late draw from Dakkada

By Abdul Raheem
Jigawa Golden Stars FC of Dutse scored a last minute equaliser through Richard Christopher’s penalty to split the points with visiting Dakkada FC of Uyo on Sunday.
Jigawa were looking to pick all three points from the MatchDay 22 tie of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season at their adopted Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna but were jolted when goalkeeper Victor Sochi’s howler allowed Solomon Chigozie’s shot from outside the box slip though his hands into the net.
The home side fought back gamely seeking the equaliser but were undone by their poor marksmanship and a resilient Dakkada defence not ready to yield any ground. As the game moved towards the end the homers piled more pressure through continuous attacks, one of which yielded a penalty, and Richard Christopher stepped up to slot in.
The game between two sides nestled in the lower rung of the table, did not allow Jigawa live up to their name of giant killers. The home side started well dominating the game with a penalty appeal waved away by the referee when the ball appeared to hit the hand of a Dakkada defender in the 8th minute.
The Badaru Boys maintained the pressure for another six minutes before the visitors fought back with Bassey Spencer shooting wide. Solomon then got a pass from the middle of the pitch, drove the ball forward before releasing what seemed an innocuous shot but Sochi couldn’t gather the ball as it slipped into the net.
Jigawa striker Samuel Stone toiled hard but couldn’t get the much needed breakthrough until he was substituted. Substitute, Abdullahi Lala hit the post with a free kick, but couldn’t get the equaliser until the last minute of added time, when the referee adjudged that a Dakkada player handled the ball in a goalmouth melee and awarded a penalty for Richard to score.
