Okoronkwo insists Pelican Stars won’t be relegated

Pelican Stars prolific striker, Joy Okoronkwo has vowed that her side will keep their enviable premiership status at the end of the on-going top-flight campaign.

The top-flight newcomers are somehow experiencing stage fright and unsteadiness in the four-week old Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.

Okoronkwo however insisted that her side perceived nervousness is temporary as they are determined to overcome the teething problem to quickly take their rightful position in the elite league.

“We will not be relegated, Pelican Stars have come to stay in the NWFL Premiership, and relegation in whatever form is not for us.

“Our target for the on-going NWFL Premiership season is to finish among the top five teams, that’s our belief and I’m confident we will make it at the end of the campaign.

“Yes, we looked nervous and shaky with our performance so far in the league, it’s just temporary, we will surely overcome.

“Nobody should write us off yet on account of our performance so far, the league is just four-week old, we still have 22 matches on the calendar to play.

“Pelican Stars will bounce to reckoning, our target is to win all our home matches while prying for away points,” said the former Abia Angels goal poacher.

Okoronkwo insisted that the NWFL Premiership matchday 5 matchup against fellow newcomers, Royal Queens will provide the much expected turnaround for the Calabar side.

“Our target is to claim first win of the season against newcomers, Royal Queens on Wednesday.

“That match is important as it will prove to be the season’s changer and turnaround in our fortune.

“Once we are able to break the ice picking our first victory nothing will hold us down anymore.

“We have corrected the mistakes that have cheated us from winning our previous matches and I’m hopeful everything will turn out perfectly well for us come Wednesday.

“We are not underrating Royal Queens as they have done pretty well for themselves within the same time but we have told ourselves not to lose any game on our ground,” said the former Sure Babes lethal finisher.

Pelican Stars are rooted at the bottom of the 14-team Premiership log on poorly one point 11 behind league leaders, Bayelsa Queens.
