The Arsenal Golf and Country Club located in Obinze, Imo state has commenced the construction of a permanent golf house for the club.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, the club’s captain, Clifford Orjiakor disclosed that they have 18 golf holes located in a secured place within the barracks, the army is our landlord. We have public spirited people who always come to our aid whenever the need arises pointing out that their only challenge has been a befitting club house to complement the golf club.
“We have now taken a bold step in building a world class club house, we have done the club house launch tournament and the contractor has been mobilised to start work.
“We do not have all the money to foot the bill but people usually appreciate good work and will invest too, it’s a good place to invest.
“It provides recreation, good health, walkout for golfers in Owerri. It is the only place to be, with its 18 golf holes which will make you to trek about 8.7meters.
“We are blessed to have the likes of Obi Ralph Ekezie, who has been helping the club to grow, Rtd. Major Gen. Owuama who has been paying the club workers’ salaries for the past three years and Engr. Charles Ngaoka who has greatly supported the club,” said Orjiakor.
In his own word Engr. Ngaoka, who is the club house building committee chairman, said they have been playing golf there for long spearheaded by the late Gen. Yasuf, who they dedicated a golf hole to, he described the golf club as a place you can go for relaxation, a place to keep body and soul at peace. He pointed out that what they have before now was temporary but this is a modern facility where you can meet and discuss with different personalities. The club house when completed will add Imo state on the tourist map of Nigeria.
“We need sponsors as there are benefits to be derived in investing in the project. We are building for posterity, a place where people can come and relax even 20, 50 years to come.
“Arsenal golf club and country home is the only playable golf course in the state and also located at every secured environment.
“We have not been able to get support from the government, we usually attend to our needs and problems without going cap in hand to the government.
“We are the best in South-South and South-East given the quality of personalities in our fold as members, we have about 20 golf workers whose salaries are paid promptly every last week of the month.
“We face the challenges of termites and other insect, the place is a tourist attraction to the state and hotels in Owerri whose businesses are attached to the golf club,” said Ngaoka.
Architect Amaefula Obioma who admitted that the challenge for e befitting club house has always been there but expressed confidence that the long time desire for a club house will be achieved this time around.
“I started playing golf three years ago and it has been a worthy experience because I truly find a home in the club.
“When the challenge of the club house came up though it has been there but this time around the BOT and captain are trying to make sure that the long time desire of the club is achieved.
“When I was contracted for the design of the building I saw it as an honour and I did it whole-heartedly as a way of giving back to the club,” said Obioma.
The contractor handling the Arsenal golf club and country home club house building project, Architect Kelechi Ezike expressed delight at the turn of event describing his role as a privilege and opportunity given to him to serve the club.
“The club members are men of integrity, expecting very good construction to be delivered at the appropriate time.
“I assure that that the building will be ready within a time frame of four months, if everything is done right there will be no challenge or delay,” he promised.
